カフエ
Kafue
僕は或カフエの隅に半熟の卵を食べてゐた。
I ate a soft-boiled egg in the corner of a certain cafe.
するとぼんやりした人が一人、僕のテエブルに腰をおろした。
Then one vague person sat down on my table.
僕は驚いてその人をながめた。
I was surprised and looked at the person.
その人は妙にどろりとした、薄い生海苔の洋服を着てゐた。
The person wore a strangely thick, thin nori seaweed outfit.
虹
Rainbow
僕はいつも煤の降る工廠の裏を歩いてゐた。
I always walked behind the soot-falling arsenal.
どんより曇つた工廠の空には虹が一すぢ消えかかつてゐた。
A rainbow disappeared in the cloudy sky of the arsenal.
僕は踵を擡げるやうにし、ちよつとその虹へ鼻をやつて見た。
I tried to squeeze my heels and sniffed at the rainbow.
すると――かすかに石油の匂がした。
Then-there was a faint smell of oil.
五分間写真
Five-minute photo
僕は或晩春の午後、或若い海軍中尉と五分間写真を映しに行つた。
I went to take a picture with a young Navy lieutenant for five minutes one late spring afternoon.
写真はすぐに出来上つた。
The photo was ready immediately.
しかし印画に映つたのは大きい※といふ羅馬数字だつた。
However, what was reflected in the print was a large *, which was a Roman numeral.
小さい泥
Small mud
僕は或十二三のお嬢さんの後ろを歩いて行つた。
I walked behind a couple of young ladies.
お嬢さんは空色のフロツクの下に裸の脚を露してゐた。
The young lady exposed her bare legs under the sky blue floc.
その又脚には小さい泥がたつた一つかすかに乾いてゐた。
There was also a small piece of mud on his legs that was slightly dry.
僕はこのお嬢さんの脚の上の泥を眺めて行つた。
I went looking at the mud on this young lady's leg.
すると泥はいつの間にかアメリカ大陸に変つてゐた。
Then the mud turned into the Americas before I knew it.
山脈や湖や鉄道も一々はつきり盛り上つてゐた。
Mountain ranges, lakes, and railroads were all on the rise.
僕はおやと思つてお嬢さんを探した。
I thought I was looking for a young lady.
が、お嬢さんは見えなかつた。
But I couldn't see the young lady.
僕の前には横須賀軍港がひろがり、唯一面に三角の波が立つたり倒れたりしてゐるだけだつた。
The Yokosuka military port spread out in front of me, and the only thing that happened was a triangular wave rising and falling on the surface.
